Im f****** pissed off !!!

Mon Sep 29, 2008, 10:23 AM
As it say in the subject im pissed of... ...why, read on!

Allmost week a go i posted eight job application and no one has sent me anything back.
My basic message was, that i will do anything if i can get regular job or trainee job on a modellin company, because i don't have so much work experience and im getting older and i need the job. I was a bit worried because im not educated, i don't have any degrees and i am 100% self taught 3d studio max user.

The problem is now that i think companies are very rude because they don't send anything back to people who sent job applications. I would be happy if anyone send me even a repply saying that "you suck, and you will never make it in 3d modelling" at least i know that they had read my application. I allways appreciate constructive critique because it helps me to evolve, but when they don't send me anything im alone in the dark.

Yeah I don't get the point in having a degree, cuz everyone can finish that course, but the real skill doesn't just pop up out of nowhere!!

i think that the only thing you need is passion, and the rest comes from hard work

Well, you dont need a degree to get a job in 3-d. But it is nice to have and can give you the extra boost to get the work. With that said if you want to get into modeling you had better know how to rig and texture also. And I wouldn't expect to get a modeling job unless I had quality z-brush material or VERY nice models. You need to cruise over to [link] to see where you need to be. It is a huge resource to all Cg people that is invaluable. Post your Demo-reel on the forums and see what they have to say. You have decent work, however It isn't amazing work, so don't be surprised when you don't get a job. This is a difficult business, and even when you get a job people will still shark you like what happened at Meteor studios (now Lumiere). Always figure out what you need to improve and one day you should get what you are looking for. But yeah a week isnt a-long time to wait to hear back on a resume. 2 weeks is probably average.

Hmm, in finland the 3d scene isn't that huge, there are lot of small companies, and only few huge. The biggest company is propably remedy (max payne 1/2) and the second biggest is bugbear (flatout). But i know my flaws and believe i have many :), i can't draw at all so that is the main reason why i know i will never be able to master zbrush or make any concept art or quality textures. And with my lack of work experience apllied on trainee work allso , so i can learn from the peolple who know what they are doing.

yeah I didnt realize you were in another country so things may be easier there I dont know. But I wouldn't think drawing skills are a requirement to learn Zbrush. I think that a good way to get better at 3d is to check out gnomon and digital tutors tutorial DVD's. I have a few myself and they are a great help. Seriously though, look at people's demo-reels on the finished work and also the WIP forum on CG talk. You will see all skill levels and it will give you an idea of where you should be in your current career level. I learned a-lot from this thread [link];page=1&;pp=15
Basically this guy is an example of how not to act. You can see his work by looking at the "Cg portfolio". But These forums have always been enlightening to me thats why I suggest you dig through them.

Hey Niko,
Getting a job in the Games Industry isn't easy. You need to be specific on what type of artist you want to be, i.e, Character, Vehicle, Environment, Texture etc & base your portfolio around it. For example, if you want to be a vehicle artist then create lots of vehicle samples & only forward them to Racing Studios. Developers don't want to see samples of work which doesn't relate to the games their producing, it shows the individual hasn't done any research on the studio.

You can probably understand the amount of people applying to games developers, hundreds a week so I'd agree with Mr-NYM, a week isn't a long time.

Applications also depend on if you followed their requirements. If they have application forms then fill them in, if they ask for 20 samples of quality work then make sure you send a minimum of 20. Entering the games industry as a junior artist isn't impossible it just takes time to get your portfolio right. It also takes perseverance, some of my candidates have been working on their portfolios for months.

A basic sum up

Specific, high quality samples in your portfolio. At least 20-25 are required.
Research the companies you're applying for, find out what criteria needs to be met. Find out what games they've developed, find out if they have intern programs etc
Dont give up - It sounds like your pretty disappointed & it's only been a week.

The standard of work required by artists in the games industry is quite exceptional. If you don't feel your work is quite there, then there are plenty of resources on the internet which offer professional tips on improving your techniques.

If you need to know anything else, feel free to contact me. Cheers

Ehkä kannattaa kokeilla hyödyntää kaikkia mahdollisia suhteita (minkä varmaan olet jo tehnytkin..) ja hakea johonkin pienempään lafkaan töihin. Isoimmat 3D talot Suomessa ei joko tarvitse lisää väkeä tai palkkaa vaan parasta mitä irtoaa. Harjoittelu paikkaa sieltä tuskin saa.

Yksi vaihtoehto on hakeutua opiskelemaan/töihin ulkomaille.
